Subject Groups

Cases handled by the administrative courts are closely connected to people’s lives and the activities of communities and businesses. The main subject groups of cases include governmental functions and general administration, self-government, matters related to immigration and international protection​, building, environment, social welfare and health care, economic activities, transport and communications as well as taxation.

The Supreme Administrative Court, the regional administrative courts, and the Administrative Court of Åland share a common case classification system. Under this system, matters are divided into eight main subject groups, approx. 50 case groups, and approx. 370 specific case titles. The list below sets out the main subject groups and case groups, together with examples of specific case titles.
